  10.    This memo provides information for the Internet community.  It does
  11.    not specify an Internet standard.  Distribution of this memo is
  12.    unlimited.

  16.    This article originally appeared in Volume 2 Number 12, (December
  17.    1992) of Matrix News, the monthly newsletter of Matrix Information
  18.    and Directory Services, Inc. (MIDS).

  20. 1.  Which Books
  21.  
  22.    Here is a list of books related to using the Internet, which is the
  23.    global and exponentially growing network of more than a million
  24.    computers that communicate by interactive use of the TCP/IP
  25.    protocols, for the use of millions of users.  This article was
  26.    prompted by the recent publication of nine or ten books on the
  27.    Internet in the space of a year (some are so new they aren't even
  28.    published yet).  I have also included some books that have been
  29.    around for quite a long time (as long ago as the dim past of 1984).
  30.    I think all of them contain useful information for people new to the
  31.    Internet.

  33.    Some of the books included here are about more than the Internet.
  34.    Some of them are about the Matrix, which is the set of all computer
  35.    networks worldwide that exchange electronic mail.  The Matrix
  36.    includes FidoNet, UUCP, BITNET, USENET, the Internet, and many
  37.    others, but is not limited to any one of those networks.  This
  38.    particular bibliographic collection is oriented around the largest
  39.    computer network in the world, the Internet, because of all the
  40.    recent books about that network.  Matrix News continues to publish
  41.    information about the Matrix, including but not limited to the
  42.    Internet.

  114.    technical aspects of technology, such as the TCP/IP protocols.
  115.    Instead, I have included books about the resources and users of the
  116.    Internet.  I have grouped them in rough classifications for
  117.    convenience of presentation.  Several of these books fit several
  118.    classifications.  For that reason and others, the classifications
  119.    should be taken as illustrative, not definitive.  Table 1 summarizes
  120.    some features of all the books described.
